Best Hunting Crossbow: Bear X Trek 380 Crossbow Review

Bear X Trek 380 Crossbow Review

Bear X released the Trek 380 as an affordable option for hunters who want a low cost high quality lightweight 380 fps compound crossbow. Bear X is great at making solid crossbows for relatively low prices.

We are always up for a Bear X crossbow to test and review so we were happy to receive the package. We speed-rated the crossbow and tested it for a week (about 100 shots). That is why I highly recommended you buy this cheap hunting crossbow for target shooting, home defense, bowfishing, survival, etc.

Bear X Trek 380 Crossbow Specs

  • Speed: 380 FPS
  • Length: 37"
  • Width Axle-to-Axle (uncocked/cocked): 18"/16"
  • Weight: 7.5 lbs
  • Power Stroke: 13.25"
  • Draw Weight: 185 lbs

The Package

The Bear X Trek 380 crossbow comes in a convenient ready-to-hunt package which means that it is already pre-assembled at the factory. Bear X also makes sure the crossbow is already well tuned.

In the package, we found the Trek 380 crossbow, a 4x32 scope with multi cross-hair reticle with functioning eyepiece, 5-arrow quiver, three 20 inches 370 grains carbon bolts with field points, cocking rope, and rail lube/string wax. I think it is the best crossbow for hunting in 2024.

Design

The Trek 380 is a well-built crossbow. All components feel solid and well built as we come to expect from Bear X. The crossbow has an overall length of 37 inches and an axle-to-axle width of 18 inches uncocked and 16 inches once cocked.

Bear X Trek 380 Crossbow

The Trek 380 is not a heavy crossbow, it weighs 7.5 pounds. It is comfortable to hold and shoulder. It has a durable synthetic stock that has multiple grab locations making the crossbow easy to maneuver and shoot. It has good front control and feels well balanced.

Bear X also installed a dual string suppressor system on the crossbow.

Optics

The Trek 380 has a Picatinny style scope mount rail on which the scope is attached. The 4x32 illuminated scope has a multi cross-hair reticle with a functioning eyepiece. It is a fine scope considering the price of the crossbow. The Bear X crossbow scope is easy to sight in en performs well.

Cocking

This Trek 380 can be cocked with the rope cocker that cuts its 185 pound draw weight in half. So you'll only have to pull 92,5 lbs. The cocking process is quite smooth and makes little noise. No complaints here. I also like the size of the foot stirrup.

Trigger

The Trek 380's trigger gives little to no friction and I detected no creep. Its trigger assembly contains auto safety and an anti-dry fire inhibitor that prevents the crossbow from dry firing.

It is not an advanced trigger that more expensive crossbows have these days but it is a solid trigger system nonetheless.

Performance

The Bear X Trek 380 utilizes its 13.25” power stroke to propel arrows at targets with a velocity of 380 fps with a draw weight of 185 pounds.

We speed-tested the crossbow with our chronograph. We registered speeds of 376, 378, 375, and 382 fps.

We put a target at 50 yards and shot some groups. We had pretty tight arrow groupings, especially after we were used to the crossbow and did some extra fine-tuning.

Recommended Accessories

Arrows and Broadheads

Alpha nocks and Truex nocks can both be used with the Bear-X crossbows. Any other nocks will void the warranty. We recommend sticking with the Truex 20 inch arrows. They are good hunting arrows that weigh 370 grains.

Broadheads

If you want to combine the arrows with a pair of good mechanical broadheads we recommend Rage Crossbow X Crossbow broadheads. These mechanical broadheads are optimized for high-velocity crossbows. They have two .035-inch thick stainless steel expandable blades that deal a devastating 2-inch+ cut.

Storage and Transportation

We recommend buying a crossbow case to keep the crossbow safe and secure. The Guide Gear universal crossbow case is an affordable case that allows you to transport and store the crossbow securely. The soft crossbow case has a backpack strap and fits the Trek 380 perfectly.

What we also recommend is buying a good crossbow sling. Southland Archery makes great universal slings that come cheap but are durable and effective.

Conclusion

If you want a crossbow with high speed, accuracy, and quality at an affordable price then the Bear X Trek 380 is a fine crossbow that will serve you well. The crossbow performs great and is easy to handle. It is a great entry model for beginners and a reliable tool for every hunter.
